Probiotics are the good bacteria that live in your gut, making up your ‘gut flora’. There are about 400 species of them in a healthy person and around 300 trillion good and bad bacteria. Lactobacillus produces the enzyme lactase which actually breaks down the sugar in milk (lactose) so is extremely beneficial for those with lactose intolerances.
Lactobacillus also creates an acidic environment in which bad bacteria cannot survive, therefore protecting you against all manner of nasty infections.
